The Lower East Side

The Lower East Side
Acrylic Wall Mural - Split in 2 parts

My kitchen wall needed that something extra, I couldn't figure what. Till it dawned on me, since I have many vintage kitchen utensils and ware displayed all over, how about a nice wall mural from my most favorite past street scene? Yea! The Lower East Side is what I meant, the store fronts and fire escapes all included.

For the fun of it, I made all the signs relate to work done by family members or some friends, let them feel more at home when visiting. That could work for any such custom artwork, if I do it for you on your wall or canvas, I can insert your family names in those signs as well.

Our mothers coming home from Shul

Our mothers coming home from Shul
Pencil, 8.5 x 11 - Original owned by D. Glick, N.Y.

One thing is sure when talking about prayers. there's real sincerity in the prayers of our Jewish mothers. Their Tehilim and Machzor soaked in motherly tears, hoping and praying for the best in their offspring. It is their constant devotion and love, that earned them the title of a "Yiddishe Momme".

In this scene, we have two Yiddishe Mothers coming home from prayers, with their prayer books in their hands. I can imagine them lamenting their woes, a son who left to America, a daughter to marry off, a family of hungry mouths to feed. Did anything change?

Catching up on the latest news

Catching up on the latest news
Pencil, 8.5 x 11 - Original owned by D. Glick, N.Y.

If you couldn't find a job in pre-war Poland, at least you were up to date with the latest news. You were able to read from as many as 24 yiddish daily newspapers, almost on every topic, the many ism's of that era and their ideologies. I guess when there's not much work, you have the time to read.

The guy walking towards the building, is also without any work, but at least he is busy, walking.

Walking with the Rebbe in Meah Shearim

Walking with the Rebbe in Meah Shearim
Pencil, 8.5 x 11

It always has to fit my travel itinerary when visiting Eretz Yisrael, to take a stroll through these holy streets of yesterday. I would just NOT taunt my camera in their faces, instead I'd feel like a spy who is on a clandestine mission to record their simple living lifestyle, which I (we) secretly admire.

Bungalow in the Catskills

Bungalow in the Catskills
Pastel 8x10

I was sitting in my car in front of my friends bungalow, and I couldn't help but marvel at the old wood structure that has served some families in the last sixty years or so. People leave the comfort of their home, just to get bitten by bees and sleep in some old smelly beds. "What don't you do for the kids" is the answer, well, maybe they have a point here.

How much running space can you allocate your child in the streets of Brooklyn? Where can your child see and touch a real flower, climb a tree house, or catch fireflies in a jar, if not here in the old rundown colonies.

Luckily, I had paper and pastels in the car and my instincts drove me in a drive to capture what I saw. Here it is for your enjoyment. Ouch! what just bit me?
